"Eric," Tom called as soon as he entered the ops room. The detective constable's head appeared from behind his computer screen like a meercat. "What have you got on at the moment?"

"I'm redoing the financials of both Mayes and Lewis."

"Turn up anything useful?"

Eric shook his head. "No, I still can't find anything registered to Lewis besides his car. The owner of the flat he lived in was Mabel Reid, who is his aunt on his mother's side."

"Has anyone spoken to her yet?"

"No. She's living in a local care home. Andy Lewis had power of attorney regarding her affairs," Eric said. "I spoke with the home, she has advanced dementia and Lewis is her only known living relative, although he hadn't visited her in the last twelve months. Not that she would be aware of that."

Cassie came to join them. "We've put in a request for the aunt's bank accounts but we need a court order for that. Just waiting on a magistrate."

"Good," Tom said, turning back to Eric. "If that comes back today, Cassie can pick it up for you. I want you to drop what you're doing and focus on Greg Ellis. You haven't met him I take it?" Eric shook his head. "That'll help. Stick to him like glue. The wall of silence around these guys is starting to irritate me. Someone knows more than they are telling us, maybe they all do, and if they won't volunteer it then we'll have to get in amongst them and keep picking at the threads until something unravels. And it will unravel. I just hope it's before another body turns up."

Eric glanced at the clock. Tom noticed.

"I'm sorry about whatever you had planned, Eric. I promise I'll make it up to you. I've just left Greg Ellis outside. I don't know where he's headed but you'll either find him at home or his golf club I imagine."

"No problem,” Eric said, shutting down his computer and picking his jacket up from where it was hanging on the back of his chair. "I'll call Becca on the way, she’ll understand."

"And Eric," Tom said, as the DC scooped up his car keys. "Pay attention. Ellis could be a target… or indeed a suspect, so be careful and keep in touch."

Eric nodded coolly. Cassie offered him a supportive wink and Eric left. She turned to Tom.

"So Ellis has caught your eye then?"

"He was the troop sergeant," Tom explained. "By his own words they all look to him for guidance. I don't see why now is any different. He came here fishing for information to see what we knew, not to offer us any realistic help in catching a killer. If anyone knows what the hell this is all about, it's going to be him."

"What are we going to do now?" Cassie asked.

"I want you to try and find out where Andy Lewis hid his money and how he earned it. If nothing turns up we'll go and see the estranged wife and son again. In the meantime, I'm going to speak to the DCI.
